I wonder how many children, today, are familiar with the willow plate pattern that most adults know so well? Here in adaptation from the Chinese, is the legend of the mandarin's daughter who loved the lowly clerk, and of how the story is perpetuated in the famous pattern. The story appeared in Good Housekeeping and might have a plus sale interest for antiquarians. The Willow Pattern Story. China In china in a distant part of the country it's name long forgotten, lay a small town with a king who ruled selfishly for years on end. He raised taxes at high prices and if a family was too poor, he would charge double. He had a fair sweet daughter Mai with black hair like silk and almond eyes, as sweet as honey.

The Legend of the Willow Pattern was invented by the English over years ago to promote pottery sales of a china willow pattern based on an older china pattern. The story runs as follows (with the frequent references to the figures in the plate design omitted): Once there was a wealthy mandarin, who had a beautiful daughter. Willow-Pattern Ware, originated in Staffordshire, England, c Thomas Minton, then an apprentice potter, developed and engraved the design, presumably after an old Chinese legend. It portrays the garden of a rich mandarin whose young daughter elopes with his secretary.
